WHILE BAPTISTS hold many convictions in common with other Christians, in some areas we are known for somewhat unconventional ideas.

We were the first people to write an appeal in English for total freedom of religion, even (a radical suggestion for the time) Jews and Muslims.

Baptists were among those who stood against the King in the Civil War. While the decision of many Baptists to fight is a questionable one, their opposition to the idea of the Divine Right of Kings was based on the concept that all men and women are equal before God and should participate in an equal society.
