INFORMATION ABOUT PETER GREEN

PETER HAS been the pastor at Silver Street Mission since February 1984, when he arrived as a second-year theological student at Morling College.

For a large part of his time at Marrickville, he has had a part time role, lecturing in Church History or English language, or working in Market Research or Journalism. He currently works four days a week on database integrity checking and local IT support.

Peter grew up in Fairfield, NSW, and went to Fairfield Primary and Parramatta High Schools. He is married. His wife is a welfare worker and they have four adult children and three grandchildren. The children work in music, IT, Government and rehabilitation.

Peter was a Local Government Town Planner before commencing theological studies, and has degrees in Arts (English and German majors), Town Planning and Theology as well as a Diploma in Ministry.

He edited The Australian Baptist magazine from 1989 to 1992 when it closed, and produced a further five issues of a successor magazine, AM, during 1992. It was in that time that he gained experience with computers which undertlies his current IT work.

Peter first heard the gospel through a retired Methodist minister, Rev. Dickie Barton, who was filling in as a school Scripture teacher. Later he began attending the Baptist Church in Fairfield and was converted through Open Air Campaigners, who at that time preached in Goulburn Street in Sydney.

While studying Engineering and working for a Civil Engineering consultancy as a draftsman, he was struck one morning by a sense that God was calling him into full-time ministry. However, his initial application for the Baptist ministry was rejected. It took a further 20 years before an unexpected conjunction of circumstances created an opening for him to reapply.

He has a long-standing interest in revivals, and frequently writes and speaks on this subject.
